Wings of a Believer

Hope and Fear..

Balance is fundamental in Allah’s religion. Just like a bird that navigates its way through different weather conditions, the wings of the believer enable him to adapt accordingly to the challenges of this Dunya and propel himself accordingly in order to maintain balance throughout his journey. Over-steering in either direction inevitably leaves him astray from the straight path; how then can he reach his destination?

Hope and fear are required in varying degrees depending on the circumstance. When one is on the verge of or has committed a sin, more fear is required- fear of incurring Allah’s anger and His punishment, the adverse repercussions of such evil actions, fear of falling from the ranks of the righteous, etc. It would be indeed unwise to be hopeful then, because this could affect his judgement and prevent him from fathoming the severity of the sin or worse, belittle the necessity of repentance. In contrast, when one realises his inherent weaknesses or shortcomings and wants to repent, it is better for him to place more hope in Allah’s mercy, that He is the indeed the one who overlooks and is most Forgiving. To be excessively fearful in such a context may drive him into utter despair, blinds him from Allah’s mercy and prevents him from strengthening his resolve to not repeat such mistakes again. Allah wants us to take charge of our lives and engage in meaningful actions, no matter how minuscule they may seem, whereas the Shaytan tricks the believer into either extremes and prevents him from doing so. The believer adapts accordingly and saves himself from destruction by his own actions.

“And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. And He pardons much”- Surah Ash-Shura, Ayah 30.

May Allah guide us towards and along the Siratul-Mustaqeem as we strive to worship Him with love, fear and hope.
