the last of the Surahs to be revealed as a whole

The beautiful Surah An-Nasr (The Help) was the last of the Surahs to be revealed as a whole. According to Scholars, the Surah was revealed a few months before the demise of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) either within the precincts of Mecca during his Farewell Pilgrimage in “Zulhijja”, 10(AH) or in Medina after his return from the Farewell Pilgrimage.

Surah An-Nasr (The Help) in itself is a clear sign from Almighty Allah that the mission of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) has been fulfilled and that he can now look forward to return to his Lord in full favor.

“When comes the Help of God, and Victory, and thou dost see the people enter God’s Religion in crowds,” Verses 1-2

It is a known fact that Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) migrated from Mecca to Medina after being persecuted and hunted. In Medina and in its outlying parts the powers of truth and righteousness assembled round the Prophet while in Mecca attempts to destroy the Prophet and his community by the Meccans and their confederates shrunk back on their own heads.

The bloodless conquest of Mecca by an army of ten thousand Muslims was the crown and prize of the Prophet’s patience and constant effort. After the peaceful taking over of the Holy City of Mecca, whole tribes of the country collectively adhere to the Prophet and Islam. Over a hundred thousand believers went along with the Prophet on his Farewell Pilgrimage to the Holy City of Mecca.

From this little epitome, it is recorded in history that in a short lapse of time Islam has spread beyond Mecca and Medina to include the whole of Arabia. Tribe after tribe accepted Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) as their leader and ruler and offered their allegiance to him; Arabian merchants on their part spread the message of Islam beyond the borders of Arabia.

“Celebrate the Praises of thy Lord, and pray for His forgiveness: For He is Oft-Returning (in Grace and Mercy)” Verse 3

Usually men are proud of themselves when they achieve success and upon fulfillment of their dreams and ambitions. Conversely, we must humbly attribute any success we get in our works, not to our own merits, but to the goodness and mercy of Almighty Allah. In addition, Almighty Allah teaches us the beautiful manners of asking forgiveness for whatever lapses we have inadvertently committed;  with humility we must constantly offer our praise and thanks to our Lord without whom no success and victory is possible.

The mission of Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) had become obviously triumphant through the infinite grace of Almighty Allah. The lesson to be retained is that humility is preferred to self glory; victory is the crown of service and not an occasion of exultation.  The abundant outpouring of Allah’s praises whether in word or in conduct are more appealing than selfishness.
