Feet Police

“Straighten your lines and leave no gaps. Foot-to-foot, shoulder-to-shoulder.”

We’ve all heard it, but have we acted upon it? I always wonder what people think when the Imam says this… How can this statement pass over one’s head? Is it our ignorance of the deen or the arrogance in our hearts that prevents us from unifying together in prayer? It pains me to think that this is the case.

Correcting our lines is truly a means of creating unity within the Muslim Ummah. Nu’man ibn Bashir (ra) reported, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (sallalahu alayhi wa salam) say:

‘Straighten your rows, or Allah will create dissension amongst you.’”

 (Sahih Muslim)

What a warning! Dissension, meaning opposition between us. This seems to be what



happens naturally today when we aren’t lined up properly. Simply put, the “proper row” is one that is kept precisely straight; our heels must be aligned at the bottom of the body (good thing for us, there’s a line on the carpet in all masajid indicating where the heels should go) and our shoulders should be connected at the top of the body. Anas (radiAllahu anhu) described his state at the time of the Prophet (sallalahu alayhi wa salam).

He said,

“At the time of the Messenger, I saw each of us adjoining our shoulder with those of our companions and also (adjoining) our feet with those of our companions, but if you were to practice this today, a person would flee (from you) like an obstinate mule.”

(Bukhari and Muslim)

An obstinate mule, subhan’Allah! Nowadays, we are so stubborn. We’ve become accustomed to praying solo, forgetting that we’re all slaves of Allah, all here for the same reason, all with the same mission… and for most, jamaat salaah (congregational prayer) has lost its true meaning due to one simple fact—Our  hearts have become unattached. We do not realize the very special bond that is created between us when we pray together.  If we did and if we felt love towards one another, we wouldn’t be upset or bothered if one put their foot next to ours, or if one scooted close enough for the shoulders to touch.  We would think about it, and actually want to put our feet next to each other’s (especially because it’s sunnah). 

We would be accepting and feel gratitude towards Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) that He has chosen us to unite and stand before Him in worship. Just like a very wise Imam always says, if the thinking is right, the worship is right.
Anas ibn Malik (radiAllahu anhu) also reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallalahu alayhi wa salam) said:

“Straighten your rows for the straightening of a row is a part of the perfection of prayer.”

(Sahih Muslim)

Think about having the perfect prayer, one just like RasulAllah (sallalahu alayhi wa salam) and the Companions. Our hearts should crave for such a thing. How wonderful would it be if we could come together as an Ummah and put these teachings into practice? Those parallel lines truly make a difference!

Not only is it completely and 100% sunnah to keep strong, straight, and tight rows, but it’s something loved by the All-Mighty. He (subhana wa ta’ala) says in the Qur’an:

“Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly.”

(Surah As-Saf 61:4)

Lining up (shipshape and gap-less) is also a special quality of the Angels:

“And indeed, we [angels] are those who line up [for prayer]…”

(Surah As-Saffat 37: 165

So, why not implement this into our everyday lives and keep aspiring to such great qualities?

Perfecting our prayer is also just a wonderful approach in increasing the organization, cooperation, and general awesomeness of our communities. If we do our part, we can make that happen, insha’Allah. Let’s start today by connecting our feet and filling the gaps!

I pray that this little bit of info has been of benefit and hopefully will be taken as a means to bring us all closer together as one family and truly closer to Allah (‘azza wajal).

Side Hadith: Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallalahu alayhi wa salam) said,

“The best of the men’s rows (in Salaah) is the first row and the worst is the last; but the best of the woman’s row is the last and the worst of their rows is the first.”
(Muslim)

pembentukan nebula di dalam surah Ar-Rahman

Apa yang menakjubkan di sini adalah proses kehancuran bintang sehingga bertukar menjadi bentuk bunga ros ini dinyatakan oleh Quran. Dalam surah ar-Rahman ayat 37,

Maksudnya:”Maka apabila langit terbelah dan menjadi merah mawar seperti kilapan minyak, maka nikmat Tuhanmu yang manakah yang kamu ingin dustakan?”

Ayat ini menceritakan mengenai langit yang sedang melalui proses kehancuran dan pada masa itu berubah menjadi merah seumpama bunga ros yang menyinar.

Salah satu contohnya adalah apa yang dikirimkan oleh teleskop ruang angkasa-Habel kepada kita berupa gambar-gambar sejumlah bintang ketika sedang terpecah pada tanggal 31 Oktober 1999 M.Biro Penerbangan dan Ruang Angkasa Nasional Amerika (NASA) menyiarkan sejumlah gambar yang ditayangkan oleh teleskop ruang angkasa tentang bintang yang mengalami fasa pemecahan.

Sekelompok bintang yang membentuk seperti kabut bercahaya yang sering disebut dengan nama mawar kemerahan yang mengkagumkan, inilah ibarat Al Quran yang sangat terperinci dan mengkagumkan.

The Beauty of Surah Ar-Rahman

The first time I heard Surah (chapter) Ar-Rahman (The Compassionate), I was in complete awe.  I was mesmerized at the beauty of it (despite the fact that I understood very little). I’ll admit, the feeling overcomes me when I hear any surah in the Qur’an beautifully recited; but the first time I heard surah Ar-Rahman it was something completely different and special – it was during Jum’a prayer (Friday congregation) – it was that exact moment that I knew I wanted to memorize it. As soon as I arrived home I looked into the translation and its’ meaning. Just as I had suspected, it became even more beautiful when I understood it all.

In this surah, Allah SWT (God) appeals to mankind with all that He has created. A verse that is repeated throughout that surah “  فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ ” – “Which, then, of the benefits of your Lord will you deny?” Allah SWT recounts for the whole of humanity all the beauty that He has created. In many ways I see this surah as an appeal from Allah SWT. Allah SWT, Ar-Rahman, indeed the most compassionate and most merciful wants to see all of mankind in paradise. He is telling humanity of the beauty he has created for us, beauty which we can observe with our own eyes. Why would we choose to deny that which we can see? Why would we choose to doubt these miracles.

“He created man. He taught him distinctness. The sun and the moon are in reckoning. The herbs and trees do obeisance. And the sky! He has elevated it and set the balance. That you should not trespass in respect of the balance. And observe the weight with equity, and do not make the balance deficient. And the earth: He has laid it for the creatures. Therin are fruit and palm – trees sheated. And grain chaffed and other food.” (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:3-13)

In this surah, Allah SWT shares with us a miracle. This is a miracle that scientists have not known how to explain for many years and have only recently come to learn.

“He has let loose the two oceans meeting together. In-between them is a barrier which none of them can transgress. Which, then, of the benefits of your Lord will you deny? Out of them both come out pearl and coral. “ (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:19-22)

Above is a picture of where the North Sea meets the Baltic Sea. In the holy verse above, Allah SWT tells us that despite two seas meeting, there is a barrier between them (as one exists between every two salty waters. Salty because they possess pearl and coral).

So what were the marine scientist’s discoveries? Studying the meeting of the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, they took samples from each side, they discovered that each water had its’ own unique composition and characteristics (temperature, salinity, density, animals that inhabit it).

Despite existing for thousands of years they have remained obedient so that we may witness such a wonder. The miracle mentioned above was not understood (in great detail) at the time the verse came down; nobody at the time had even witnessed the phenomenon. I believe this was a miracle Allah SWT had created for future civilizations.

Such is the beauty of the Qur’an.  Allah SWT shares with us these magnificent miracles and the wonders of life so we may know the truth.

Please don’t take any of what I have said myself to be fact. It is simply my very limited understanding of this Surah. Instead, I plead with you to look into the tafsir (translation and interpreted meaning) from scholars who will surely provide you with far more knowledge and truth than I ever can right now.

“Everyone who is theron is mortal. And there will remain the Face of thy Lord, Owner of Majesty and Beneficience. Which, then, of the benefits of your Lord will you deny” (Surah Ar-Rahman 55:26-28)

“Maka nikmat Tuhan-mu yang manakah yang kamu dustakan?”

[19]مَرَجَ ٱلۡبَحۡرَيۡنِ يَلۡتَقِيَانِ
Ia biarkan air dua laut (yang masin dan yang tawar) mengalir, sedang keduanya pula bertemu;

[20]بَيۡنَہُمَا بَرۡزَخٌ۬ لَّا يَبۡغِيَانِ
Di antara keduanya ada penyekat yang memisahkannya, masing-masing tidak melampaui sempadannya;


Satu lagi teori yang membuktikan ketaatan air ini kepada Allah s.w.t. adalah pembahagian air laut yang tidak bercampur di antara satu sama lain dan tetap berada pada kawasan yang telah ditetapkan. Al-Quran telah lama membuktikan teori ini. Allah berfirman: "Ia biarkan air dua laut (yang masin dan yang tawar) mengalir, sedang keduanya pula bertemu; Di antara keduanya ada penyekat yang memisahkannya, masing-masing tidak melampaui sempadannya; Maka yang mana satu di antara nikmat-nikmat Tuhan kamu, yang kamu hendak dustakan?" (Surah Ar-Rahman: 19-21).

Allah berfirman lagi: "Dan Dia lah Tuhan yang telah mengalirkan dua laut berdampingan, yang satu tawar lagi memuaskan dahaga, dan yang satu lagi masin lagi pahit; serta Ia menjadikan antara kedua-dua laut itu sempadan dan sekatan yang menyekat percampuran keduanya." (Surah al-Furqan:53)

Kini, selepas lebih kurang 1400 tahun, seorang saintis lautan dari Perancis, Jacques Yves Costeau, mengakui teori bahawa sememangnya lautan tidak bercampur di antara satu sama lain. Sememangnya terdapat seperti dinding yang terbina dari membran sel yang membahagi setiap lautan yang terdapat di bumi ini melalui perbezaan suhu dan arus yang wujud di dalam air laut tersebut.
