DAY OF UHUD

It was the third year of Hegira. The defeat at Badr caused an incurable wound in the haughty people of Quraish. The Meccans, particularly Abu Sufyan; Iqrimah, a son of Abu Jahl’s; Safwan, a son of Umayyah’s, etc. began to incite people to avenge their relatives who had been killed at Badr...
The whole income of the great trade caravan of one thousand camels, which had been brought by Abu Sufyan from Damascus and which had induced the Battle of Badr, was allocated to the new war of revenge that would be waged. In addition to the one thousand soldiers from Mecca, two thousand mercenaries were hired from the Arabian Desert with the incomes of the aforesaid caravan with the ultimate objective of building an army as great as possible, which incident is mentioned in the Glorious Koran as follows: “Lo! Those who disbelieve spend their wealth in order that they may debar (men) from the way of Allah. They will spend it, then it will become an anguish for them, then they will be conquered. And those who disbelieve will be gathered unto hell.” [Verse 36, Surah Al-Anfal (Chapter of the Spoils)]

In the meantime, those Meccans that had been captured as prisoners-of-war at Badr and then emancipated on condition that they should not war against Muslims anymore breached their oath and joined the army that had been getting prepared for the war of revenge.

Women, too, joined the army to encourage men so that they should not desert the battlefield. Besides, private assassins were prepared, one of whom was Wakh’shi of Khabash, a slave of Jubair Ibn Mut’im, who was peerless at throwing spears. His master told him: “You, too, shall take part in this campaign. If you kill Hamzah, an uncle of Muhammad’s (p.b.u.h.), in retaliation for my uncle Tu’aimah, who was killed at Badr, you shall be free…”

And Wakh’shi also joined that Mob of barbarians and he was continuously provoked by Abu Sufyan’s spiteful wife all along the way: “O Wakh’shi! Take my vengeance, too! Take my vengeance, too!”
