"And of mankind, there are some who say: 'We believe in Allāh and the Last Day'
while in fact they do not believe"
(2:8).
"They try to deceive Allāh and those who
believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not!"
(2:9)
The Munāfiqūn are devious. They say the words with their tongues but deny what they have said with their hearts and deeds. They state belief outwardly while concealing their true inner reality. They think that by doing this they are deceiving Allah and the believers, but in reality, they are only deceiving themselves. Subhan Allah -here Allah is even telling us what they are thinking in their hearts.
The hearts of the Munāfiqūn are infected with two types of diseases:
(i)
مرض الشهوات
:
the disease of excessive, wrongful desires;
(ii)
مرض الشبهات
:
the disease of doubts.
Even after being aware of their diseases, they refuse to cure them with repentance and righteous deeds. Hence, the disease (مرض) remains in their hearts.
Lying is one of the most obvious signs of the Munāfiqūn. They are liars because:
(i) they say what they do not believe in their hearts; and
(ii) they deny the truth –the Quran, the unseen, the hereafter
